INTERNATIONAL DAY 2014 – October 8, 2014, Cincinnati, Ohio
We are pleased to report that International Day 2014 was a special event. Thanks to all of you who came and made the day a success! The morning began with the presentation of the 2014 ACR International Outstanding Leadership Awards to Shulamith Koenig (individual recipient from USA) and ProDiálogo (organizational recipient from Peru). Ms. Koenig is the Founder & Executive Director of People’s Movement for Human Rights Education (PDHRE), a non-profit international organization working since 1988 to encourage citizens around the globe to know and claim their human rights as a birth right.
Iván Ormachea, President of the Peruvian NGO ProDiálogo, Prevencion y Resolucion de Conflictos, accepted the award from the International Section on behalf of his organization. ProDiálogo was honored for its work in managing processes for consensus building aimed at sustainable development in the context of a culture of peace. Ms. Koenig and Mr. Ormachea each spoke about their successes and experiences, and they highlighted their insights and learnings. Next, Chris LaHatte (New Zealand), Ombudsman for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), spoke on the subject of "Dealing with Cultural Difference in a Multi Stakeholder Environment." In the afternoon, Nina Meierding (USA) conducted a workshop on "The Impact of Culture on Negotiation and Mediation."
International Day 2014 also marked the official passing of the torch from outgoing Section Chair Mary Damianakis to incoming Chair Lee Paulson. Many thanks to Mary for all of her hard work during the 2013-14 term and welcome to Lee as Chair for 2014-15.
